H-1B Visas: Specialty Occupations

The H-1B category applies to foreign nationals who wish to perform services in a specialty occupation, services of exceptional merit and ability relating to a Department of Defense (DOD) cooperative research and development project, or services as a fashion model of distinguished merit or ability.

In order to qualify for an H-1B visa, the foreign national must have theoretical and practical knowledge within a specialized field, and a bachelor’s degree or higher relating to that field. Fashion models who can show distinguished merit or ability within their profession also qualify for H-1B visas. Certain professions, as well as foreign nationals who are seeking an H-1B2 DOD Researcher and Development Project Worker visa, may have additional requirements to meet as well.
